Hello! My name is Gillian...
Hello! My name is Gillian Wylie and I have recently joined the Gecko team as their Apprentice Digital Marketing Manager – how exciting!
For the next 12 months, I will be learning how to become an expert in all things digital through on-the-job training at Gecko HQ and off-the-job training provided by YouTrain – a specialist IT training company.
I will be learning everything including social media and content marketing, analytics, SEO and PPC, as well learning about marketing strategy, client management and project planning.
Once the 12 months is complete, I will gain a diploma in Digital Marketing – YAY!
You may be wondering who I am and why I applied for this apprenticeship?
Well if you aren’t, I am going to tell you anyway.
I am a 20-year-old (almost 21 *dance emoji*) regular gig goer, fashion obsessed and is always thinking about food – but let’s be honest, who isn’t?
My interest in marketing was initially sparked through studying Media and Communication at college for two years where I gained a real insight into the media industry studying the likes of journalism, video and radio production, PR and web design.
After completing my HND, I soon came to realise I wanted to go down the marketing / advertising / PR route. So, whilst working full time in a shoe shop, I scurried the web for marketing related jobs. Most required a degree or at least marketing experience.
However, I soon came across Gecko’s advertisement for an Apprentice Digital Marketing Manager. I knew an apprenticeship would be a great way for me to learn on the job, be fully funded and also gain a valuable qualification at the end of it. So, it is pretty self-explanatory after that.
I sent my CV over and had a couple of interviews, one with YouTrain and one with Gecko - and shortly afterwards I received a phone call – I got the job!
I'm now 4 weeks in as an Apprentice Digital Marketing Manager!
And I am feeling almost settled!
I’m currently planning my content diary for the next couple of months where I will be creating regular blog posts on the topics I’m learning about.
The purpose of this is to not only provide new, engaging and more personal content for the Gecko website but will also give me the chance to properly research and learn how to use all the different digital marketing channels and why they are used to help our clients grow. It will also act as a good reference when studying for my assessments with YouTrain.
I think that is all I have to say for now. My first “proper” post will be on something quite generic and not too technical for my first month at Gecko.
Be sure to keep an eye out on our Twitter @wearegecko for all the dets!
